PE in our Curriculum

Curriculum Vision

At St Agnes’ we recognise a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Pupils are given opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that help them to build character and resilience, and help to embed values such as teamwork, fairness, sportsmanship and respect.

Pupils take part in a range of school sport that is structured learning that takes place beyond the curriculum. We aim to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engaged in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives.

Characteristics of an Athlete

At St Agnes Catholic Primary School, we are Athletes. We develop…

  • Our balance, agility, flexibility and co-ordination through clear progression of lessons and learning across all year groups in locomotion, dance and gymnastics;
  • Our ability to think tactically and communicate the use of tactics in a variety of different sports and competitions such as tournaments, festivals and sports days;
  • Our ability to reflect on our own performance and that of peers, as well as finding ways to improve and challenge ourselves;
  • The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance;
  • Our ability to focus on our LORIC skills and remain resilient while taking part in adventurous challenges, both individually and as part of a team;
  • Our enthusiasm for new experiences and positive attitude through the whole-school growth mind-set we adopt;
  • Our understanding of the importance of physical health for reaching our full potential that is explored not online within the PE curriculum but embedded further through cross curricular links in PSHE and Science;
  • Our enjoyment of physical activity within high-quality lessons taught by external coaches and teachers.
What does P.E look like in St Agnes?

The P.E curriculum is based on a rigorous, progressive framework of skills. Complete PE includes ideas for teachers and high-quality resources, such as planning frameworks, checklists and model videos that show what success looks like in lessons. The sequence of units cover every context of learning from EYFS through to KS2. Our online planning resource includes a range of physical activities such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing and climbing. These activities help children develop fundamental movement skills and coordination.

EYFS

Pupils in EYFS engage in the physical world through a wide range of activities designed to help develop their gross and fine motor skills. Pupils will have daily opportunities to be physically active in a variety of ways and will also begin to be exposed to games and start to understand how to communicate effectively with a team in their All for Sport Lesson. Continuous provision ensures physical development is always happening in EYFS.

KS1

Pupils will follow a sequence of lessons in PE improving their movement skills including running, jumping, throwing and catching, balance, agility and co-ordination. These skills are applied in a range of situations, individually or as part of a group or team, in topics such as dance, gymnastics, ball sports and athletics. Pupils will begin to develop their understanding of team games, learning simple tactics and how to apply them in different games, as well as how to communicate to teammates.

KS2

Pupils continue to follow a sequence of lessons revisiting topics covered in KS1 as well as new topics in order to build on the skills they developed and continue to develop them further. In addition to this, pupils in Year 4 have the opportunity to participate in a rigorous two-week swimming course at Barnet Copthall Swimming Pool. The pupils will take part in competitive team games, communicating as a team and developing their resilience and ability to work collaboratively. They have the opportunity to enter competitive and non-competitive events representing their school and participate in individual and team competitions.

Physical Activity and School Sport

Pupils are given many opportunities beyond the classroom to become involved in a variety of sports and games that are both individual and team-based. Within school, Year 5 and 6 pupils are encouraged to take ownership of the physical activity on the playground by becoming play leaders. They attend a Bronze Ambassador Training Day where they are introduced to different games and activities to promote on the playground. They support in the up-keep of the resources, ensure equipment is put out every play time and set up games so that everyone has something to play. Pupils in Year 5 and 6 participate in football tournaments with many other schools across Barnet where they compete in two separate leagues: mixed and girls only.  Pupils in KS2 take part in external competitions, such as cross country and primary athletics. In addition to this, pupils across the school have the opportunity to take part in festivals, where the element of competition is removed and the focus is on pupils engagement and participation in activities they may not have had the chance to experience before. Such activities include: gymnastics, boccia, dodgeball and basketball. KS1 pupils also attend the KS1 Winter Festival, KS1 Summer Festival and the Change for Life Festival. Within school, we provide as many opportunities as possible for pupils to experience sports taught by experts. Key Stage Two pupils take part in a cricket taster day run by Middlesex Cricket Club and across the school various athletes visit and run tailor-made activities. Each year, EYSF, KS1 and KS2 take part in Sports Day and have the opportunity to win the House Cup. These activities not only promote physical fitness but also teach important concepts like sportsmanship, teamwork, and fair play.

Adaptations

P.E. classes strive to be inclusive and accommodate children of all abilities. At St Agnes we modify activities to suit individual needs, provide alternative options, or offer additional support to ensure that all children can participate and enjoy the benefits of physical activity.

Changes and adaptations are made to activities and specific tasks to ensure all learners are able to participate fully. Adaptations can range from small, subtle changes when preforming a skill to larger modifications to the activity or sport itself. Within our PE curriculum, our online tool has a range of adaptive PE cards to support the teaching and implementation of a skill. It also provides learning cards that are used to support, embed and challenge learning.

Pupils with SEN are given the opportunity throughout the year to attend multiple Boccia festivals where they learn to play the sport and the experts who run the event carefully adapt the session to suit all needs. In addition to this, they also take part in a Barnet Bar No One Event with other schools to give them the opportunity to trial a range of sporting activities.

Assessment

Assessments will take the form of end of unit games, performances or routines and ongoing teacher assessments throughout the unit.  Class Teachers and All For Sports Coaches carry out their own individual assessments based on the topic they taught each half term.
